He is known to have been a member of one of the founding ensembles of hip hop music in Nigeria known as The Thoroughbreds , which comprised of some notable names in mainstream music. His name is B-Elect and yes, we have all been wondering where he’s been over the years.
B-Elect chose to stand away from the throng. He chose to do hip hop, his passion, in a right and positive way by aligning with the gospel. Recently, he disclosed his intention to release a documentary on Gospel Rap in Nigeria so we had to hold him down for a chat. Here, we bring you excerpts from our talk with him.
Good to have you in here. For the benefit of those who don’t know you, give us a brief about you.
Well, my name is B-Elect. I am a rap artiste. I used to make positive rap music but now my focus is on gospel music because there's so much negativity with the music being fed to our youths.
We got wind of your proposed project on the Nigerian gospel rap. Tell us about this.
Oh yeah, I am presently commencing work on a Gospel documentary which dates back to a long time ago, it is a first of its kind.
Hip hop has been jacked by the pop' culture, hence to an extent, hip hop, the art for what it was has evolved into pop. From today for the benefit of those who want to know, I will share elements of the art form on my [facebook] page every day till the year runs out, also watch out for the B-elect: A Documentary on Gospel Rap coming out early next year.
That’s impressive. Will it be about the gospel in general or gospel entertainment?
It’s about gospel rap...spirituality viz-a-viz industry, acceptance, roots and evolution. There's nothing like it anywhere presently...we would also delve into authenticity by biblical exposition to a point so people can get a balanced view as well.
