CH@T ROOM : “I hear great songs every time from Nigeria…Spain is great musically because Most Spaniards either studied music or have been to concert from their childhood “ – Amos Obasohan

Gospel City Naija has been a rallying ground for gospel artistes all over the world to come and gain leverage beyond their circles. We've been beaming our searchlight across the globe, finding and giving vereve to people who are doing remarkably well by bringing them out here to The CiTy.

Today, we are excited as we introduce you to an impressive Nigerian who is doing well in Spain with the propagation of the gospel through word and music ministrations.

He has been involved in some of the biggest gospel events in Spain and took out time to tell us about his experience, his ministry, the spainards and other interesting tit bits. He even went ahead to hand pick a Nigerian gospel artiste...

Welcome to The CiTy, sir. For the benefit of those who don’t know you, can you briefly introduce yourself and what you do?
Thank you. Well, my name is Amos Obasohan. I am a pastor with Elect of God Ministries and a singer. I live in Spain but work with choirs all around Europe. It may interest you to know i was the lead singer of Compassion Band then in Lagos. It had the likes of Mike Aremu, Segun Obe, Agola, Phillip, and the others.

When did you move to Spain...and what would you say was your reason of leaving Nigeria?
I came to Spain in 2001. I moved to over here to pastor the church I am presently with.

How was the reception in Spain like to the gospel when you first got there?
Well, it was great. God brought me to the right people so it was easy for me to adapt into the place.

So would you say the people of Spain were receptive to the gospel even from the first time you took it to them?
Yes…The ground was already prepared. Not everyone will receive the word, but to the ones God has sent me they have been receptive. With music, the folks over here are receptive.  They will turn their backs away easily if one comes to them without music. At least, that has been my experience.

It’s a good thing. Music is a lubricant. It’s a fluid to the soul. Tell us about Elect of God Ministries… the vision, how it started and how it operates.
It was started in the year 1999 by Bishop Kingsley Ohangbon. Our vision is to reach the weary world with the word. We have branches in the major cities of Spain. We reach out to blacks more but i work with the major gospel choir in Spain and with the Spanish federation of evangelical churches to reach out to the whites.

That's great. We saw some pictures from some of your events and it had Spaniards in the crowd and on stage with you.
90 percent of my crowds are made up of Spaniards.

Okay. Tell us about these events especially the oncoming 'Concierto benefico de Gospel'
It is to raise funds for children in Equatorial Guinea. It is an annual concert hosted in conjunction with the Spanish Federation of Evangelical Churches, and the Madrid Gospel choir.

Who are the main organizers of the concert?
The Spanish federation of evangelical churches

We noticed that you have been a regular feature on the event over the years. What prompted this?
Yes. Well, because the Madrid Gospel Choir is my choir, and they saw a black brother that can do just as good as any other black brother from the states.

God put you there for a purpose. We in Gospel City believe in the Most High God and the marvelous ways He works with us, mankind.
You can say that again.

We learnt the event is scheduled for the 15th and 16th of this month. How are you preparing?
I got to rest today… but from Thursday, the other artistes will arrive from the States. I will need a guy on the organ to be here so when he arrives, we will put finishing touches to my performance.

Do you have plans to perform anytime soon in Nigeria or any part of Africa?
Yes Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa. I need to come back home.

Are there concrete plans for this?
Yes..but i need to reach an agreement with my guys back there.

So when are we expecting you in Nigeria?
Soonest.  I’ll be there as soon as agreements are reached.
Ok.Let's delve into your music career. Do you have an album out?
I do. I released it 2010 as my solo album.

Any plans for another one anytime soon?
I will start working on the next one from mid next year

How would you describe the gospel music scene in Spain and the one in Nigeria?
Well, it’s been long I left home but it is kicking up. I hear great songs every time from Nigeria. Spain is great musically because it is all live performance, no play back. Most Spaniards, somehow, either studied music or have been to concert from their childhood so they all love good music.

Is there any other thing you'd like people in The CiTy to know about you, your music or gospel music in general?
Everyone out there that knows he or she got a message should deliver it. It should be the love for music that should drive any one to sing, not money… because, if it is the love for music that drives one, no matter what, you’ll win.

We wish you all the best. It was great having you in The CiTy today but before we leave the chat room, tell us, which gospel artiste(s) from Nigeria do you enjoy listening to right now?
Kenny Kore

Ok. It was great having you in The City. May God bless you and all you do.
Same here…and may He bless you too. I will be in touch.
