Gospel City Chat: “Gospel Music has got to Step Up to The Number one Spot in Nigeria” – AK Browne

Yup! Gospel City Naija took a trip to the Coal City of Enugu state (Nigeria) on a covert mission to uncover the city’s bubbling gospel music scene. First stop, we hooked up with a young producer/artiste we used to know from way back.

He was into secular music back then but is now fully committed to gospel music after reaffirming his Faith in God. His name is AK Browne and The City rejoices with this one. We hooked up with him in his studio, HITSOURCE STUDIO, and had a brief chat with him and decided to put it up here for you.
He spoke about a few things that we find interesting. Read more to find out yourself.

Good to meet you again, AK Browne. For the sake of our readers, give us a brief on you.
I am AK Browne. I used to be a secular artiste/producer. I produced songs for a couple of notable artistes. I did some engineering then for J. Martins, produced some beats for Stormrex, Dialect and the likes. I also worked with Red Button (South Africa) and DJ Craig (South Africa).

Nice one. You sort of had it going on for you then. What made you switch to gospel?
There is a portion of the bible that always gets to me anytime it crosses my mind… “What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul?”… I just couldn’t imagine myself getting all the fame in the world and missing out on God’s plan for His people. It got to a point that I just couldn’t take in the secular world anymore and had to give into Christ.

That’s great. So how has it been for you after making this move?

Firstly, I have peace of mind now. Also, I am no longer under the pressure of trying to ‘blow’ because He said in His words that His thoughts towards me are of good and not evil so I have an expected end. I have contentment in His promises and I totally believe in them. Secular music can fail you after a good outing but working with Christ, you just won’t fail. His grace is sufficient to see us through everything.

That’s good to know. What are your plans for gospel music? You have an album in the works?
My plan for gospel music is to bring people to the knowledge of Christ through gospel songs and make people to appreciate it above what they find in the mainstream. God’s ministry goes beyond the pulpit so I see music as an avenue to reach out to people. I am currently working on my album and I have two singles out on the internet.

Ok. We will get them and put up here on Gospel City Naija. Meanwhile, What do you have to say about gospel music in Nigeria and Enugu in particular?
Gospel music has got to step up to the number one spot in Nigeria. It’s about time we make that happen. We need to rise above mediocrity and push our music into the mainstream. Gospel artistes need to live up to expectations by churning out above average songs. In Enugu, people really need to slow down on the parochial kind of music that abounds here. We mustn’t limit gospel music to the traditional/native flow that people in the east are used to. I support indigenous gospel music but we also have to open up to artiste that do gospel R&B, rap and other genres.

It was nice chatting with you, AK Browne. We pray for the grace and ease of God to be upon you as you take up your place in His kingdom.
Amen. Thanks so much. I appreciate.
