Tips to Help Preach the Gospel to Yourself

It’s a phrase we use a lot in AEC, “Preach the Gospel to Yourself.” We use it for two reasons (at least).

Firstly, because we’re convinced that no matter how long you’ve been a Christian, what you essentially need to know is the Gospel. One author put it, “We don’t ever move on from the Gospel, we only go deeper in to it.” If we think that the Gospel is only for those who don’t believe, to come to believe, then we’ve seriously misunderstood its message. The Gospel is for Christians too.

Secondly, because we’re convinced that we tend to forget. Even if we realise that the Grace shown to us through the Cross is vital for maturing Christians, we still tend to leave it behind, focus on other things, take our gaze from the Cross and concentrate on ourselves. As Christians we always need ‘topping up’.

So here are 7 tips I shared with our “Taught to Teach” guys and girls this Sunday evening:

1) Read your Bible regularly.

It seems obvious but we don’t always do it. What’s more, we usually read it wrongly. What do I mean by that. Basically, we often treat our Bible reading as a chore to get out-of-the-way. If we’ve finished another book of the Bible by this time next month we can be happy with ourselves. But that’s the exact wrong way to look at it. Rather we should be engaging with scripture, not just passing through it. Asking questions, looking for Gospel fragments. If reading the Bible isn’t helping us learn more about God, more about ourselves and more about the Gospel then we aren’t doing it right.

  2) Read helpful Christian books.

There are lots of Christian books we could read. Some of them will help us to want to love Jesus more…some wont. Read the ones that do. Follow up on recommendations that friends (and pastors) give you. Re-read books you’ve found helpful in the past. Don’t feel you have to finish a book just because you’ve started it. If it isn’t helpful, call it a day. Side note, chat to others about what you’re reading…sharing these things help us to process and retain.

3) Listen to helpful  music.

Just like with books, there’s an awful lot of Christian music that wont make you want to love Jesus more, wont make you more grateful for what He’s done. Try finding the music that does. And it doesn’t have to cost too much. Youtube has more than just funny cute videos you know! If a song particulatly strikes a chord on a Sunday, hunt it down. Feed your ears as well as your eyes!

4) Spend time with encouraging friends.

Do you have those people who just spending 5 minutes with them make you want to love the Cross more? I can think of 3 or 4 people who, even through a text, can make my love for the Saviour grow and grow. If you know who these people are in your life, you’d be daft not to make the most of them.

 5) Set digital reminders.

How many times a day do you see a clock in the ‘hh:mm’ format? On your phone, on your computer, in your car. There’s no escaping them. So why not use the fact that they look a lot like how we lay out a Bible verse to help you to preach the Gospel to yourself? Have you ever thought of intentionally linking 01:21 with Paul’s glorious words in Colossians, that while we were once enemies of God, we’re now reconciled because Jesus died for us? Okay, you might not look at the clock that early in the morning very often. But there are enough hours in the day for this to be very useful.

 6) Set non-digital reminders.

How about simply linking ‘gospel thinking’ with activities you’re already in the habit of doing? If we can do that then we’ll instantly be in the habit of preaching the Gospel to ourselves! It doesn’t need to be something Jonathan’s used as a sermon illustration, just something that you do all the time. Imagine if every time you made a cup of tea you thought about the Gospel. You’d probably think about it much more regularly!

7) Find Gospel Illustrations in everyday life.

While non-digital reminders might not be illustrations, some of the things we do ARE illustrations. Think about having a wash every day… reminiscent of any Biblical language regarding the Gospel? How about being washed by the blood of the lamb? Now next time your in the shower you’ve got no excuse not to preach the Gospel.
