VOICE MANAGER: Cracked Voice  (How to Prevent your Voice from Cracking)
 By Emeka Phrancis VoiceCoach

Hi Friends,  I am faced with a great need to discuss this topic.

It is an obvious fact that all Singers (Pro. or Amature), Public Speakers, Teachers and all Professional Voice Users are faced with the challenge of experiencing a CRACKED VOICE either on a daily basis or a long period of time and are constantly caught in a dilemma with so many mind boggling and unanswered questions about what and how to deal with this situation.

So, as your Voice Coach I have decided to take that burden from you and take you through a series on this challenging topic.

A VOICE BREAK, VOICE CHANGE, or VOICE MUTATION commonly refers to the deepening of the voice associated with puberty. Before puberty, boys and girls have roughly the same vocal pitch, but during puberty the male voice develops a deeper pitch and more evident. Girls' voices usually only deepen by a couple of tones and the change are barely noticeable.

A similar effect is a VOICE CRACK or CRACKED VOICE in which a person's voice suddenly and unintentionally enters a higher register (usually falsetto) for a brief period of time. This may be caused by singing at a pitch outside of the person's vocal range, stress, emotional tension, or the physical changes associated with puberty. The puberty-associated cracks are only temporary and generally reduce in frequency as a child reaches maturity.

In this series you'll be learning about some of the daily practices that causes cracked voice. This is applicable to all Professional Voice user.

1. PUBERTY experience for young people between ages of 11 and 14½

2. Throat Clearing & Harsh Coughing
One of the most frequent causes for throat clearing and coughing is thick mucus (due to dry vocal folds) or too much mucus (as with a cold) on or below the vocal folds. The safest and most efficient way to clear mucus is by using a gentle, breathy productive cough where there is high airflow with little sound. This can be achieved by using the following strategy: take in as deep a breath as possible, momentarily hold your breath, and produce a sharp, silent “H” sound while you expel the air.

3. Common Cold

4. Yelling or screaming, trying to be heard in noisy places like bars, sport arenas, large family gatherings, airplanes, and buses.

5. Singing above your range(higher or lower than is comfortable).

6. Smoking - Smoking is disastrous for the speaking and singing voice. Even Secondhand smoke exposure may also result in a cracked voice. It causes laryngeal (voice box) cancer, inflammation and polyps of the vocal cords that can make the voice very husky, hoarse, and weak.

7. Exposure to other irritating substances. Irritants like marijuana and tobacco, ranging from air pollution to chemicals we use in our homes, can cause voice crack.

8. Diseases: Diseases like Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease (LPRD), Acute and Chronic Laryngitis, Polyps, Vocal Cord Haemorrhage, Throat cancer and so on

Voice Crack on one hand is natural, inevitable and a beauty of life especially when one begin to mature(@puberty) and ageing (@old age) while on the other hand its really bad cos it can ruin an event, speech, a gig and so on. The HOW's are so numerous to list out on this article but lets examine a few TIPS on how best to prevent your voice from Cracking.

TIP 1: Relax and Calm down. Tension causes your voice to naturally go higher. If you are speaking before a crowd, try to relax and take deep breaths. Try not to be nervous, this will cause involuntary spasms in your voice box, causing the pitch to fluctuate.

TIP 2: The best way to rid of foreign substances and bacteria which may be prolonging the voice loss is to drink plenty of clean water. Water has proven to be No.1's natural healer for Voice Crack after AIR so utilise it. Drink plenty of fluids, mostly eight to ten glasses of water a day. Also, drink plenty of juices and tea with honey (these are lubricants).

TIP 3: Take it easy on the icy cold water, spicy food, dairy product that causes mucus, unhealthy habit like too much of alcohol and smoking (they cause throat Dryness).

TIP 4: If you have a job which requires you to raise your voice to be heard, use a good and clear mechanical means to make yourself louder.

TIP 5: Maintain a balanced diet and should avoid foods that can cause throat infections or cold items such as ice cream, cold drinks, etc.

TIP 6: Get Professional Advice from a Voice Coach. Even professionals have Voice coaches. No human is a fountain of knowledge and Nothing helps more than help who is good at it. Just ask!
